Copyright is the legal right for any originator or assignee to distribute literary, musical, or artistic material and to allow others to do the same. Fair use allows people to use small portions of a work for certain purposes such as commentary, critiquing, news reporting, or in a scholastic setting. In teaching, I would make it clear to students what the copyright laws are and that plagiarism will not be tolerated in the classroom. If it were to happen, further investigation would need to be done to determine if it was purposeful or accidental. In the case of purposeful plagiarism, consequences to the grade would happen. Academic dishonesty can and will happen in the classroom. It is important to stress to students the importance of creating their own work, and what the consequences would be if they did not do so.
